A laptop that runs hot, spins its fan like a hair dryer, and slows to a crawl after twenty minutes isn't necessarily on its way out. Nine times out of ten it's doing exactly what it was designed to do when it can't cool itself: throttle down to survive. The good news is that the fix is one of the cheapest and most satisfying jobs Joe does.
What's happening inside
Laptops pull cooling air through a small intake, push it across a heatsink, and blow the hot air out a side vent. Over a couple of years that path fills with a felt of dust, pet hair and pocket lint — and because a laptop's cooling is so much tighter than a desktop's, it clogs far faster. At the same time, the factory thermal paste between the processor and heatsink dries out and stops carrying heat well.
The result is a chip that overheats within minutes, so the laptop deliberately runs slower to keep the temperature down. You feel it as heat on your legs, a fan that never calms down, and everything getting sluggish the longer you use it. Left long enough, the constant heat shortens the life of the machine for real.
The signs it's just dust (not something worse)
- The fan is loud and constant, even on light tasks like web browsing
- It's fine for the first few minutes, then slows down as it heats up
- The bottom case is hot, and the vent is blowing warm air (or barely any air)
- It's been more than a year or two of daily use without a cleaning
- Sudden shutdowns when it's working hard — the last-ditch overheat protection
Why "just vacuum the vent" doesn't cut it
Blowing canned air into the vent from outside mostly packs the dust deeper and can over-spin the fan, wearing its bearings. A proper interior cleaning means opening the laptop, removing the fan and heatsink, clearing the dust blocking the fins, cleaning off the old dried paste, and applying fresh thermal compound — then reassembling and confirming temperatures came down. That's the difference between "a little quieter" and "cool, quiet and back to full speed."
The fix — and the honest part
A laptop deep-clean with fresh thermal paste is a flat $40. It comes back quieter, cooler, and — in throttling cases — genuinely faster, because the processor is finally allowed to run at full speed again. Most are same-day.
