Why is my computer so slow? The real reasons (it's usually not what the store says)

Walk into a big-box store with a slow computer and the answer is usually a new computer. Funny how that works. The truth: most slow PCs have one of four fixable problems, and three of them cost under $85 to solve.

1. The spinning hard drive (most common by far)

If your computer is more than ~5 years old and takes minutes to boot, it almost certainly still has a mechanical hard drive. Windows 10 and 11 crawl on them — not because the computer is bad, but because the drive is the bottleneck for everything. Fix: an SSD upgrade ($50 + the drive), everything migrated. It is the single biggest speed jump money can buy, and it's not close. Machines regularly go from 4-minute boots to 20 seconds.

2. Desert dust and heat throttling

This one is an Antelope Valley special. Fine dust packs into the heatsink, the fan can't move air, the processor overheats — and modern processors don't crash when hot, they slow themselves down to survive. The computer isn't broken; it's protecting itself. Fix: a $40 deep clean with fresh thermal paste. If your tower has lived through two Lancaster summers without being opened, it needs this.

3. Startup junk and background bloat

Every program you've ever installed that added itself to startup is still there, loading before you can click anything. Antivirus trials fighting each other, three "driver updaters," a printer utility from 2019. Fix: a $50 tune-up clears it out and turns off what shouldn't run — without deleting your stuff.

4. Malware quietly using your machine

If the slowness came on suddenly, with popups, a changed browser homepage, or a fan that spins at full speed while you're doing nothing — something may be using your computer for its own purposes. Fix: virus & malware removal ($81), including hardening so it doesn't come back.

When a new computer IS the right answer

Honesty works both ways. If the machine is 10+ years old, maxed at 4 GB of RAM, and you want it to do modern video calls — repair money is better spent on replacement, and Joe will say so. That's the no-fix-no-fee promise: you pay for solutions, not attempts. Diagnostics are $26 and credited toward any repair, so finding out which of these four you have is effectively free. Ask first — the quote costs nothing.
