Open ten desktop computers from Lancaster or Palmdale and eight of them look the same inside: a gray felt blanket of desert dust packed into the fans and heatsink fins. What the dust actually does
Your processor generates serious heat, and a heatsink can only shed that heat if air moves through its fins. Dust does three things at once: it clogs the fins (less airflow), it blankets components (insulating exactly what needs to cool), and it forces fans to spin at maximum (the jet-engine sound). Meanwhile the factory thermal paste — the thin layer that carries heat from the chip to the heatsink — dries out to chalk after a few years of desert summers.
The result isn't usually a crash. Modern processors protect themselves by throttling — running slower to stay alive. Your computer literally has less horsepower in August than it did in March. People replace "slow, old" computers every year that were actually healthy machines running at half speed under a dust blanket.
The signs
- The fan runs loud constantly, even when you're not doing much
- The machine slows down noticeably in summer or after an hour of use
- Games or video calls stutter after running fine at first
- The tower is warm to the touch, or the laptop is hot enough to be uncomfortable
- It's been 2+ years since anyone opened the case
Why you shouldn't just blast it with canned air
A quick blow-out at the case vents mostly redistributes the dust and can spin fans past their rated speed (which damages their bearings). The proper job means opening the case, pulling the heatsink, cleaning the fins out of the machine, replacing the dried thermal paste, and checking every fan spins true. That's the difference between "less dusty" and "runs 15–20°C cooler."
